This volume is rooted in two convictions: first, sexuality is far more comprehensive and more fundamental to our existence than simply genital sex, and, second, sexuality is intended by God to be neither incidental nor detrimintal to our spirituality but a fully integrated and basic dimension of that spirituality. The authors address what our sexual experience reveals about God, the ways we understand the gospel, and the ways we read scripture and tradition and attempt to live faithfully.

TEACHERS GUIDE SEXUALITY EDUCATION is, basically, CHARACTER EDUCATION, which in turn is founded on human dignity and encompasses formation in moral standards and human conduct. This book is intended for educators other than the parents. It is intended for use in the classroom, in parish halls, and in other venues where educators strive to shape minds and hearts to make good and responsible day-to-day decisions on key aspects of life. This is the second of an 11-volume series, the first dealing with the basics and nuances of sexuality education; the third addressed to parents; and the next eight intended as textbook series for Grades 5 to 12 (ages 11 to 18) of the K to 12 program. The book series in SEXUALITY EDUCATION is probably a most potent tool to help young people and their parents and other educators, regardless of creed, culture, and social status, to appreciate love, life, and everything in between.

The ghosts that haunt our sexual pleasure were born in the Stone Age. Sex and gender taboos were used by tribes to differentiate themselves from one another. These taboos filtered into the lives of Bronze and Iron Age men and women who lived in city-states and empires. For the early Christians, all sex play was turned into sin, instilled with guilt, and punished severely. With the invention of sin came the construction of women as subordinate beings to men. Despite the birth of romance in the late middle ages, Renaissance churches held inquisitions to seek out and destroy sex sinners, all of whom it saw as heretics. The Age of Reason saw the demise of these inquisitions. But, it was doctors who would take over the roles of priests and ministers as sex became defined by discourses of crime, degeneracy, and sickness. The middle of the 20th century saw these medical and religious teachings challenged for the first time as activists, such as Alfred Kinsey and Margaret Sanger, sought to carve out a place for sexual freedom in society. However, strong opposition to their beliefs and the growing exploitation of sex by the media at the close of the century would ultimately shape 21st century sexual ambivalence. Book Two of this two-part publication traces the history of sex from the Victorian Era to present day. Interspersed with ‘personal hauntings’ from his own life and the lives of friends and relatives, Knowles reveals how historical discourses of sex continue to haunt us today. This book is a page-turner in simple and plain language about ‘how sex got screwed up’ for millennia. For Knowles, if we know the history of sex, we can get over it.

""Loader has brought together sources from the ancient world and opinions from a wide range of scholarship in many contentious areas concerning sexuality homosexuality, divorce, submission of women, sex outside marriage and celibacy in all of these he avoids leading the witness, letting the texts speak for themeselves He states the opinion of other scholars and occasionally of himself but his aim is to educate and not preach."---Dr. David Instone-Brewer, Senior Research Fellow in Rabbinics and the New Testament, Tyndale House, Cambridge, UK" ""Loader brings an honest and authoritative voice to the discussion of what the New Testament says about human sexuality. He invites his readers to join in a serious engagement with the scriptural texts in their social and historical context, and in so doing he leaves them with the challenge of wrestling with how those texts should be read today"---Dr. Judith Lieu, Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity, University of Cambridge, UK" "Loader looks at hotly contested New Testament passages on sexuality and offers a fair and balanced treatment of what scholars say about them. He also offers an analysis of why interpreters say what they say and demonstrates how texts may be interpreted specifically to support a preformed opinion" "Written in straightforward nontechnical language this timely and informative text is ideal for college classes as well as Bible study groups."--BOOK JACKET.
